Seaweeds

Seaweeds are seriously good to eat. They are versatile in so many textures, flavours and uses, from salads fish meat and dessert! It is sadly neglected in our diet, and i encoutage you to try it. Here are some you may recognise.

Laminaria digitata(Oarweed)

oarweedOarweed, kelp however you name it tastes wonderful, and can be used in many ways. Try slicing it and using it as pasta! Slow cook it, cassarole it, have it raw in salads, or wrap it round something. Nutty, chocolatey ,bacon...its good.


 

 

Himanthalia elongata (mermaid grass or thong weed)

mermaid grass Also known as Thong weed, or Spaghetti seaweed this one really is the mermaid of seaweed. Really tasty blitzed up in blinis.Turns bright green if you cook it, but my daughter likes to eat it raw.


 

Sea grass (entomorphia)

sea grass  Sea grass is delicious. Can be dried and used for flavouring, or garnish. Not to be missed

 

Fucus serratus (Sawtooth wrack)

In Spring this is just lovely to pick and eat on the beach, so use it in your salads, its beautiful. Turns bright green when hot. Truly underrated.


Ulva lactuca(sea lettuce) sea lettuce

Really user friendly. Grows in sheets. Wrap around some meat or fish, and cook. Particulary good when just begining to crisp

 

Sargassum muticum (feathery seaweed)  feathery seaweed                                    

Another lovely addition to salads, having little exploding flavours when eaten. Cooked with fish, scallops, made for each other
